Boeing 737-724, registered N16709, serial number 28779, flew for Continental Airlines as part of the carrier's substantial fleet of 737-700s supporting domestic and international routes from hubs including Newark, Houston, and Cleveland. Continental operated dozens of 737-700s during the 2000s and 2010s, using the type on shorter and thinner routes than its larger 737-800 and 737-900 aircraft could economically serve. As part of Continental's core narrowbody fleet before the airline's 2010 merger with United Airlines, N16709 supported the carrier's extensive North American and Caribbean network during a period of significant airline consolidation in the United States. Designed as a smaller, short-ranged alternative to the Boeing 707 and 727, the 737 was first flown on April 9th, 1967. Over its long operational carreer, the 737 has spawned numerous variants ranging in capacity from less than 100 to more than 200 seats. In fact, the 737 series is the best-selling jetliner in aviation history with more than 6,500 aircraft manufactured to date and more than 4,500 still in service with over 500 airlines around the world. Incredibly, there is a 737 taking off or landing somewhere in the world, on average, every five seconds. © Copyright 2003-2026 The Flying Mule, Inc.
