The German Jagdpanther is regarded by the ordnance experts as one of the best tracked weapons systems during WWII. The awesome Pak 43/3, L71 88mm gun was mounted on the proven Panther medium tank chassis. The gun was installed into the box shaped superstructure, which used thick steel armor of 80mm at the front, and 50mm at the sides. These frontal and side armor plates were effectively inclined to obtain an improved protection. A ball mounted MG42 bow machine gun was installed at the right side of the main gun. Weighing in at 46 tons and propelled by the powerful Maybach V.12 cylinder engine, this tank destroyer had a well-balanced fire power, protection, and mobility to high standards.
First built in Nazi Germany in 1944, the Jagdpanther was a 46-ton tank destroyer powered by a 12 cylinder gasoline engine and operated by a five-man crew. The driver had a periscope and vision slots and additional periscopes were mounted on the roof of the superstructure for the commander and loader. Its "no turret" design was built on the chassis of the Panther tank. It carried an 88mm gun and was protected by heavy sloped armor. The outcome of this design was a low-silhouette extremely high quality vehicle with tremendous firepower that many historians believe to be the best tank destroyer of the war. © Copyright 2003-2024 The Flying Mule, Inc.
