Creighton Abrams was a US Army general best known for his leadership in armored warfare during World War II and later as commander in Vietnam. During WWII, Abrams led the 37th Tank Battalion, 4th Armored Division, earning a reputation for aggressive, fast moving tactics while commanding his Sherman tank, Thunderbolt. He played a key role in the relief of Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge. Abrams later served as Army Chief of Staff and oversaw the transition to an all volunteer force. The M1 Abrams main battle tank was named in his honor. The pilot model of the M4 was completed in September 1941, and the Sherman became the most widely produced tank of the war. The M4 Sherman defeated heavier tanks with superior numbers, and by using outflanking tactics to strike thinner enemy flank armor. Shermans also achieved success with progressively upgunned models and by working with tank destroyers. The Sherman tank--named by the British--was fast, maneuverable, mechanically reliable, easy to manufacture, and effective in its infantry support role.
