The United States Navy Aerobatic Team, the "Blue Angels" were formed in 1946 with Grumman F6F Hellcats and have given continuous displays ever since, with several changes in aircraft type, currently flying the McDonnel-Douglas F/A-18A Hornet. In order to transport the ground crew, equipment and spares around to show sites, the team has always had to have a transport unit aircraft. In 1968 the team aquired a single Lockheed C-121J Super Constellation, serial 131623, which replaced the Douglas C-54Q Transport Aircraft. The Super Connie was operated from the team's base at Pensacola Naval Air Station, Florida, for three years. At the end of the 1970 season, this venerable support aircraft was replaced by a Lockheed KC-130F Hercules and it has used several of these to this day. The "Blue Angels" Super Connie was stored at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base until August 1972 when it was broken up.
