The Junkers Ju 88 was a four-seat bomber/dive-bomber. Clearly the most versatile German warplane of the World War II era, the Ju 88s production total reached nearly 15,000 aircraft. It was almost as fast as the fighters of the era, and combined with its superior maneuverability (as a bomber), the Ju 88 proved essential to Luftwaffe operations. The aircraft was equipped with one forward-firing 13 mm MG 131 or two 7.92 mm MG 81 machine-guns, two similar guns in the rear of the cockpit firing aft and two below the fuselage firing aft. The Ju 88 could carry up to 4,409 pounds of bombs Designed to meet a German requirement for a heavy dive bomber, the Ju 88 was first flown on December 21, 1936. Affectionately called "The Maid of all Work," the Ju 88 was one of the most versatile aircraft to serve in WWII. It was used as a bomber, dive bomber, heavy fighter, night fighter, torpedo bomber and reconnaissance aircraft, and was produced in more variants than any other WWII twin-engined German aircraft. The Ju 88 was so successful, in fact, that production continued almost uninterrupted between 1936 and 1945, with more than 16,000 Ju 88s rolling off the line by the end of the war. © Copyright 2003-2025 The Flying Mule, Inc.
