The Consolidated B-24J Liberator was a long-range bomber and reconnasissance aircraft. With origins tracing back to the early 1930s, many often overlook that the B-24 was the most extensively produced aircraft by the US for World War II. In fact, the B-24J variant alone reached a production total of 6,678 aircraft. The Liberator weighed 36,500 pounds empty (71,200 pounds stocked), reached a top speed of 290mph, and was armed with ten 12.7mm machine-guns with a provision for nearly 18,000 pounds worth of bomb-load. "The Dragon and His Tail" belonged to the 64th Bomber Squadron, 43rd Bomber Group (le Shima).

Consolidated B-24J Liberator

Designed to fill a United States Army Air Corps need for a heavy bomber, the B-24 Liberator was first flown on December 29, 1939. The USAAC originally asked Consolidated to build the B-17 under license, but the company instead chose to submit a more modern design with greater speed, greater range and a heavier bomb load. Despite these advantages, the B-24 was more difficult to fly, had poor formation-flying characteristics, and was much more vulnerable to battle damage, which meant it never became the favored bomber among American aircrews. It did prove more than serviceable, however, especially for long-range missions.
