One of the most formidable military aircraft of WWII, the llyushin ll, was produced in vast numbers. Over 36,000 of this two seat ground attack Soviet plane was used during the war. Top speed was 255 m.p.h. and its range was 475 miles, Cannons, machine guns and 4 bombs were usual armaments. Designed as an armored ground attack aircraft for the Soviet Union, the Ilyushin Il-2 first flew on December 20, 1939. Armed with 37mm guns and nicknamed "The Flying Tank," the Il-2 was a deadly-accurate dive bomber and tank killer. Considered the most decisive aircraft in the history of Soviet land warfare, Stalin once said that the Il-2 was "as essential to the Red Army as air and bread."
