The P-61 Black Widow was the first radar-equipped night-fighter designed by the US. First flown in 1942, over 700 P-61's would be built before their retirement at the end of World War II. The Black Widow topped out at 366 mph and had a maximum take-off weight of 36,200 pounds. The aircraft was armed with four 20 mm cannons (lower forward fuselage), four 12.7 mm machine-guns (dorsal barbette) and could carry up to 6,400 pounds worth of bombs.
The heavily-armed Black Widow-the United States' first aircraft specifically designed as a night-fighter-first flew on May 21st, 1942. The P-61 had four forward-firing 20mm cannons and a dorsal turret housing four .50-caliber machine guns. The radar equipment in its nose enabled its crew to locate and attack enemy aircraft in total darkness. The twin boom arrangements housed two Pratt & Whitney turbocharged engines and were joined at rear by a large plane and twin rudder formation. The pilot was seated in the main fuselage, with the gunner immediately behind him and the radar operator at the rear of the gondola. © Copyright 2003-2025 The Flying Mule, Inc.
