The SH-3G Sea King operated with Helicopter Combat Support Squadron 2, HC-2, aboard USS John F Kennedy during Atlantic Fleet deployments in the 1970s. HC-2 detachments used the SH-3G for plane guard duty, search and rescue, vertical replenishment, and general utility support for the carrier air wing. The G model was optimized for logistics and rescue rather than anti submarine warfare, featuring simplified mission equipment and increased cabin utility. Operating from USS Kennedy, SH-3G crews maintained constant alert during flight operations, providing critical aircrew recovery and support services throughout Cold War era carrier deployments. Designed to meet a US Navy requirement for an all-weather amphibious helicopter, the Sikorsky SH-3 Sea King first flew on March 11, 1959. Originally a submarine hunter-killer, the Sea King has since been used in a variety of operations, from search and rescue, executive transport and communications to anti-ship and airborne early warning. Its five main rotor blades and tail section fold for stowage aboard aircraft carriers, and its hull can remain temporarily watertight for water landings-a risky maneuver attempted only in emergencies.
