In 2008, 845 Naval Air Squadron deployed the Westland Sea King HC.4 to Afghanistan, supporting Operation Herrick. Tasked with troop transport, resupply missions, and casualty evacuation, the squadron operated in the challenging environment of Helmand Province. The rugged terrain and high temperatures tested both the aircraft and crew, but the Sea King's reliability and versatility proved invaluable. Missions often involved transporting Royal Marines and other forces to remote locations under threat from insurgents. The squadron's contributions were critical in sustaining frontline operations, showcasing their professionalism and adaptability in one of the most demanding operational theaters. Designed to meet a US Navy requirement for an all-weather amphibious helicopter, the Sikorsky SH-3 Sea King first flew on March 11, 1959. Originally a submarine hunter-killer, the Sea King has since been used in a variety of operations, from search and rescue, executive transport and communications to anti-ship and airborne early warning. Its five main rotor blades and tail section fold for stowage aboard aircraft carriers, and its hull can remain temporarily watertight for water landings-a risky maneuver attempted only in emergencies. When deployed by aircraft carriers, Sea Kings serve as plane guard and are the first in the air and the last to return. © Copyright 2003-2025 The Flying Mule, Inc.
