846 Naval Air Squadron participated in Exercise Clockwork, a renowned Arctic warfare training program held in Bardufoss, Norway. Operating the Westland Sea King HC.4, the squadron honed its cold-weather and mountain flying skills, essential for supporting Royal Marine Commandos in extreme environments. The exercise emphasized survival, snow landing operations, and troop transport under harsh Arctic conditions, testing both crew and aircraft resilience. The Sea King's robust design and versatility made it a reliable asset in these challenging scenarios. Exercise Clockwork solidified 846 NAS's expertise in Arctic operations, reinforcing its role in providing critical support to UK forces in extreme climates. Designed to meet a US Navy requirement for an all-weather amphibious helicopter, the Sikorsky SH-3 Sea King first flew on March 11, 1959. Originally a submarine hunter-killer, the Sea King has since been used in a variety of operations, from search and rescue, executive transport and communications to anti-ship and airborne early warning. Its five main rotor blades and tail section fold for stowage aboard aircraft carriers, and its hull can remain temporarily watertight for water landings-a risky maneuver attempted only in emergencies.
