Roma was the third and final battleship of Italy's Littorio-class, commissioned in 1942 for the Regia Marina. Equipped with nine 15-inch guns and advanced radar, she represented the peak of Italian naval engineering. Despite her impressive design, Roma saw limited action due to fuel shortages and Italy's deteriorating war position. On September 9, 1943, while sailing to surrender to the Allies after the Italian armistice, she was attacked by German aircraft using Fritz X guided bombs. One bomb penetrated her deck, detonating a magazine and sinking the ship. Over 1,300 sailors, including Admiral Carlo Bergamini, perished in the tragedy. © Copyright 2003-2025 The Flying Mule, Inc.
