Lockheed L-1011-385-1 TriStar 1, serial number 193A-1055, operated by Cathay Pacific as VR-HOK. Delivered new to Eastern Air Lines as N327EA on December 28, 1973, it was withdrawn in 1988 and acquired by Cathay in July 1989. VR-HOK was leased to Dragonair from 1993 until 1995 before returning to Cathay. It left Hong Kong in 1996, becoming N155MC and later serving Asian operators including Orient Thai, Kampuchea Airlines and Angel Air as HS-LTB and XU-700. Eventually stored in Thailand, the veteran TriStar survived rather than being scrapped and was later preserved as part of a restaurant/attraction near U-Tapao.

Lockheed L-1011 TriStar

Designed to meet an American Airlines requirement for a wide-bodied transport, the L-1011 was first flown on November 16th, 1970. The general layout and three-engined configuration is very similar to the McDonnell Douglas DC-10, with which the L-1011 was designed to compete. It was the first widebody airliner to receive FAA certification for zero-visibilty autolanding using an Inertial Navigation System based autopilot. A total of 250 aircraft were produced before Lockheed elected to completely withdraw from the commercial aircraft business as a result of poor sales.
