Boeing 767-306ER, serial number 27959, line number 609, operated by KLM Royal Dutch Airlines as PH-BZF. Delivered new to KLM during the mid-1990s, the aircraft became part of the airline's relatively small 767-300ER fleet, filling the capacity gap between KLM's narrowbody aircraft and larger intercontinental widebodies. PH-BZF was used extensively from Amsterdam Schiphol on medium- and long-haul international services, particularly routes where the larger Boeing 747 and MD-11 offered excessive capacity. Powered by General Electric CF6 engines, it remained with KLM until the airline phased out its 767 fleet in favor of Airbus A330s and other newer widebodies.
Designed as a wide-bodied, twin-engined airliner to fill the niche between the narrow-bodied 707 and wide-bodied 747, the 767 was first flown on September 26th, 1981. Developed in tandem with the narrow-bodied 757 twinjet, both aircraft share a common digital cockpit layout and are operated by a two man flight crew. Thanks to a proven reliability track-record, the 767 is approved for extended twin engine operations (ETOPS) making it a popular choice for airlines flying transatlantic routes.
