Boeing 737-33R, serial number 28873, line number 2975, operated by Air New Zealand as ZK-NGA. The aircraft became part of Air New Zealand's 737-300 fleet during the late 1990s and was used extensively on domestic services linking Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and other New Zealand destinations. ZK-NGA became particularly recognizable around 1999-2000 when it carried special "Millennium - America's Cup" promotional markings celebrating New Zealand's successful defense of the America's Cup. The CFM56-powered aircraft was one of the 737-300s that formed the backbone of Air New Zealand's domestic jet operation before the fleet was progressively replaced by Airbus A320-family aircraft. Designed as a smaller, short-ranged alternative to the Boeing 707 and 727, the 737 was first flown on April 9th, 1967. Over its long operational carreer, the 737 has spawned numerous variants ranging in capacity from less than 100 to more than 200 seats. In fact, the 737 series is the best-selling jetliner in aviation history with more than 6,500 aircraft manufactured to date and more than 4,500 still in service with over 500 airlines around the world.
