Boeing 767-246, serial number 23212, entered service with Japan Airlines as JA8231. Delivered new in July 1985, the aircraft joined JAL's early Boeing 767 fleet and operated domestic and regional international passenger services. Powered by two General Electric CF6 turbofan engines, the 767-200 offered improved fuel efficiency and widebody passenger comfort on routes that did not require larger aircraft. JA8231 was leased to Japan Transocean Air between 1993 and 1995 before returning to JAL. It remained with the airline until 2009 and was eventually sold as N769DA in 2011.
Designed as a wide-bodied, twin-engined airliner to fill the niche between the narrow-bodied 707 and wide-bodied 747, the 767 was first flown on September 26th, 1981. Developed in tandem with the narrow-bodied 757 twinjet, both aircraft share a common digital cockpit layout and are operated by a two man flight crew. Thanks to a proven reliability track-record, the 767 is approved for extended twin engine operations (ETOPS) making it a popular choice for airlines flying transatlantic routes.
