Delivered in September 1994, the aircraft joined JAL's long haul fleet and operated international services from Japan to destinations across Europe, North America, and Asia. Powered by three General Electric CF6-80C2 engines, the MD-11 combined intercontinental range with substantial passenger and cargo capacity. JA8584 served JAL until November 2003, after which it was converted into a freighter and became N274UP with UPS Airlines. It was one of ten MD-11s operated by JAL during the type's relatively brief passenger career with the airline.
