McDonnell Douglas MD-81(UHB), registered N980DC, serial number 48000, served as McDonnell Douglas's prototype and testbed for an experimental unducted-fan engine featuring contra-rotating propellers, one engine replaced with the ultra-high-bypass design intended to dramatically improve fuel efficiency. First flown in this configuration in the late 1980s and famously displayed at the 1988 Farnborough Airshow, the striking testbed never entered production as falling oil prices and the added mechanical complexity of the unducted fan reduced airline interest. The aircraft was later sold to International Airline Support Group as N560MD before being scrapped in 1994.
