Airbus A330-243, registered D-AIYD, joined Condor in spring 2022 as one of four former Etihad Airways A330-200s leased on a temporary two-year basis to give the German leisure carrier's crews training experience ahead of its incoming A330-900neo fleet. Delivered wearing a simplified white-and-gray livery with a green tail rather than full Condor branding, reflecting the temporary nature of the lease, D-AIYD became the first of the four aircraft to enter service, flying long-haul routes to Seattle, Toronto, and Punta Cana with a two-class cabin featuring 22 lie-flat business seats and 240 economy seats.
Designed as a wide-bodied, long-haul passenger transport to compete with the Boeing 767, the A330 was first flown on November 2nd, 1992. It was designed as a lengthened version of the A300 and was developed in parallel with the larger, four-engined A340, enabling many of the components to be shared between the three types. The A330 also uses the same fly-by-wire technology that was introduced with the A320, featuring a glass cockpit and side-stick controllers.
