ATR 72-201, serial number 195, first flew on October 29, 1990, and was delivered to KLM on January 6, 1999, registered PH-XLH. The aircraft was operated by Air Exel Netherlands wearing KLM's regional "KLM exel" branding, serving the Dutch flag carrier's shorter feeder routes connecting Amsterdam to smaller European destinations. Air Exel provided contracted regional capacity for KLM during a period when the airline used third-party operators for its thinnest routes rather than flying them with mainline aircraft. The aircraft remained in KLM exel livery until it was taken out of service in September 2014, ending 15 years of Dutch regional service.
