Boeing 737-530, registered D-ABIL, flew for Lufthansa wearing the carrier's "Lufthansa Express" sub-brand livery, a special scheme used between 1992 and 1994 that added "Express" titles and moved the aircraft's individual name, in this case "Memmingen," to the upper rear fuselage. Lufthansa Express aircraft, though initially intended for domestic German routes, were seen widely across the carrier's European network during this two-year branding period. As part of Lufthansa's 737-500 fleet, D-ABIL represented the airline's short-haul narrowbody operations before the sub-brand was eventually discontinued and Lufthansa reverted to standard corporate livery across its fleet. Designed as a smaller, short-ranged alternative to the Boeing 707 and 727, the 737 was first flown on April 9th, 1967. Over its long operational carreer, the 737 has spawned numerous variants ranging in capacity from less than 100 to more than 200 seats. In fact, the 737 series is the best-selling jetliner in aviation history with more than 6,500 aircraft manufactured to date and more than 4,500 still in service with over 500 airlines around the world.
