Airbus A320-211, registered C-FGYL, serial number 254, built in 1991, flew for Air Canada wearing the carrier's older 1990s-era livery before the airline's more recent rebrand. As part of Air Canada's original A320 fleet, one of the earliest examples of the type in North America, the aircraft supported the carrier's domestic and transborder short-haul network for over three decades. Air Canada was among the launch customers for the A320 in North America, and aircraft like C-FGYL represented the airline's early transition toward the Airbus narrowbody family that remains central to its fleet today.
Designed as a short/medium range narrow-body airliner to compete with the Boeing 737, the Airbus A320 was first flown on February 22nd, 1987. The A320 features side stick controllers and glass cockpit and was the world's first airliner to use use a digital fly-by-wire control system. Controversially, the software includes "flight envelope protection" to prevent the pilot from exceeding safe flight parameters. The highly successful design rapidly led to the development of the shortened-fuselage A318 and A319, and lengthened-fuselage A321 derivatives.
