De Havilland Canada DHC-8-311Q Dash 8, registered ZK-NEM, flies for Air New Zealand wearing the carrier's striking all-black livery, first introduced on a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner in 2013 to celebrate New Zealand's national colors, famously associated with the All Blacks rugby team. Air New Zealand has progressively extended the all-black scheme across multiple aircraft types, including the Airbus A321neo and 777-300ER, making it one of the only airlines in the world to operate the same aircraft type in both black and white liveries. As part of the carrier's Dash 8-300 fleet, ZK-NEM supports New Zealand's extensive domestic regional network.
Designed as a short-haul transport based on the Dash 7 design, the Bombardier Dash 8 (formerly de Havilland Canada DHC-8) was first flown on June 20th, 1983. Appearing to be a smaller, twin-engined version of the Dash 7, the Dash 8 design placed less emphasis on STOL (Short take-off and landing) capability and focused more heavily on economical operation.
