Boeing 777-223ER, registered N759AN, flies for American Airlines as part of the carrier's 777-200ER fleet supporting long-haul international routes from its Phoenix and other hub airports. The nearly 25-year-old aircraft made headlines in May 2026 when it suffered an engine failure shortly after departing Phoenix on a London-bound flight, forcing an overweight emergency landing using almost the entire length of the airport's longest runway after the crew reported they were unable to restart the affected engine. The aircraft has also worn a special "Pink Ribbon" polished livery supporting breast cancer awareness campaigns. Designed as a wide-bodied, twin-engined airliner to compete with the Airbus A330/A340 and the McDonnell Douglas MD-11, the 777 was first flown on June 12th, 1994. A pair of the world's largest diameter turbofan engines power the aircraft which currently holds the record for world's largest twin-engined airliner. The 777 was Boeing's first fly-by-wire airliner, featuring complete glass cockpit displays and flight envelope protection.
