Boeing 777-219ER, registered ZK-OKE, flies for Air New Zealand wearing the carrier's "Pacific Wave" special livery, one of several distinctive designs the airline has applied to its widebody fleet over the years. As part of Air New Zealand's 777-200ER fleet, the aircraft has supported both domestic and trans-Tasman routes, occasionally substituting for the carrier's 787-9 Dreamliners during periods when Rolls-Royce engine issues forced groundings across the Dreamliner fleet. In September 2018, the aircraft filled in for a scheduled 787 on the Adelaide-Auckland route, reflecting Air New Zealand's flexible cross-utilization of its widebody fleet during periods of aircraft unavailability. Designed as a wide-bodied, twin-engined airliner to compete with the Airbus A330/A340 and the McDonnell Douglas MD-11, the 777 was first flown on June 12th, 1994. A pair of the world's largest diameter turbofan engines power the aircraft which currently holds the record for world's largest twin-engined airliner. The 777 was Boeing's first fly-by-wire airliner, featuring complete glass cockpit displays and flight envelope protection.
