McDonnell Douglas MD-11, serial number 48546, entered service with World Airways as N278WA before later operating with Avianca Colombia. Avianca leased the aircraft during 1998-1999 to provide additional long haul capacity on international routes from Colombia. Powered by three General Electric CF6-80C2 engines, the MD-11 offered substantial passenger capacity, cargo volume, and intercontinental range. N278WA's service with Avianca was relatively brief, making it a particularly unusual aircraft in the Colombian carrier's history. Avianca operated only one MD-11, with N278WA representing the type in its fleet.
