McDonnell Douglas MD-11/ER, serial number 48746, had an extraordinary multi-carrier career spanning World Airways, Philippine Airlines, El Al, SonAir, Avianca, AV Cargo, and Global Africa Aviation. Manufactured in December 1995 and delivered in March 1996, the aircraft was leased to Philippine Airlines by World Airways in the late 1990s, flying in full Philippine Airlines livery under registration N278WA to fill gaps in the carrier's expanding fleet. Later converted to a freighter in 2012, it eventually returned to Boeing ownership as N640BC and was placed in storage at Victorville, California, its decades-long journey reflecting the extensive secondhand life common among MD-11 airframes.
Designed as a wide-bodied passenger and freight transport, the MD11 was first flown on January 10th, 1990. © Copyright 2003-2026 The Flying Mule, Inc.
