Lockheed EC-130Q Hercules, Lockheed serial number 4901, entered service with the U.S. Navy as 161495 before later joining Coulson Aviation as N131CG. The aircraft subsequently served NASA as N427NA before being acquired by Coulson and converted for aerial firefighting operations. Now operating as Tanker 131, the four-engine Hercules is equipped for precision delivery of fire retardant during wildfire suppression missions. Coulson's C-130 tankers use the company's RADS-XXL system, capable of carrying up to 4,000 U.S. gallons. N131CG remains active supporting aerial firefighting missions throughout North America and internationally. Designed to function as a troop, medical evacuation and cargo transport aircraft, the C-130 Hercules was first flown on August 23rd, 1954. Built by Lockheed and capable of over 40,000 lbs of payload, this four-engine turboprop aircraft is quite possibly the most versatile tactical transport in existence. Its modern roles include airlift and airdrop, electronic surveillance, search and rescue, space-capsule recovery, helicopter refueling and aerial attack. Capable of takeoffs and landings from unprepared runways, the C-130 has even landed and taken off from a carrier deck without benefit of arresting gear or catapults. © Copyright 2003-2026 The Flying Mule, Inc.
