Boeing 737-2A1, registered PP-SMA, serial number 20092, flew for VASP, the Sao Paulo-based Brazilian carrier that operated a substantial fleet of early Boeing 737-200s starting from aircraft built around 1969. VASP's 737-200 fleet formed the backbone of the airline's domestic Brazilian network for decades under Brazil's regulated airline market, which divided routes among VASP, VARIG, and Transbrasil. Sister aircraft PP-SME was involved in a notable 1986 runway excursion accident at Sao Paulo-Guarulhos. VASP eventually ceased operations in 2005 after financial difficulties, ending one of Brazil's oldest airline brands. Designed as a smaller, short-ranged alternative to the Boeing 707 and 727, the 737 was first flown on April 9th, 1967. Over its long operational carreer, the 737 has spawned numerous variants ranging in capacity from less than 100 to more than 200 seats. In fact, the 737 series is the best-selling jetliner in aviation history with more than 6,500 aircraft manufactured to date and more than 4,500 still in service with over 500 airlines around the world. Incredibly, there is a 737 taking off or landing somewhere in the world, on average, every five seconds. © Copyright 2003-2026 The Flying Mule, Inc.
