Boeing 727-63, registered N32720, was built in 1968 for Peruvian carrier Faucett before General Electric acquired the aircraft in 1985 to serve as a flying testbed for its experimental Unducted Fan (UDF) engine technology, a hybrid between a turbofan and turboprop aimed at improving fuel efficiency. Tested at Mojave Airport through the late 1980s, the UDF program ultimately proved too mechanically complex for airlines to adopt, especially as falling oil prices reduced the urgency for such dramatic efficiency gains. The aircraft was retired in 1989 and broken up in 1991, leaving behind a fascinating footnote in jet engine development history.
