Boeing 737-4Q8, registered PP-VTN, flew for VARIG wearing a "Billboard" titles livery, part of the Brazilian flag carrier's fleet of 737-400s that supplemented its older 737-200 fleet on domestic and regional South American routes. VARIG, Brazil's historic flag carrier founded in 1927, operated an extensive and varied fleet across its history, and the 737-400 represented a step toward newer, more efficient narrowbody aircraft compared to the airline's earlier 737 Classic-generation jets. VARIG ultimately ceased operations in 2006 amid severe financial difficulties, ending nearly eight decades as one of South America's most storied airlines. Designed as a smaller, short-ranged alternative to the Boeing 707 and 727, the 737 was first flown on April 9th, 1967. Over its long operational carreer, the 737 has spawned numerous variants ranging in capacity from less than 100 to more than 200 seats. In fact, the 737 series is the best-selling jetliner in aviation history with more than 6,500 aircraft manufactured to date and more than 4,500 still in service with over 500 airlines around the world. Incredibly, there is a 737 taking off or landing somewhere in the world, on average, every five seconds. © Copyright 2003-2026 The Flying Mule, Inc.
