Boeing 767-233, registered C-GAUB, was the very first Boeing 767 ever delivered to Air Canada, arriving on October 30, 1982, and beginning transcontinental service on February 14, 1983. As Air Canada's flagship 767, the aircraft anchored a fleet that would eventually grow to include 25 more 767s delivered through 1996, plus 23 additional aircraft absorbed from the 2001 merger with Canadian Airlines. C-GAUB itself was retired in 2005 after more than two decades of service, while Air Canada's broader 767 fleet continued flying until the type's final passenger retirement in June 2020, ending 38 years of 767 operations.
Designed as a wide-bodied, twin-engined airliner to fill the niche between the narrow-bodied 707 and wide-bodied 747, the 767 was first flown on September 26th, 1981. Developed in tandem with the narrow-bodied 757 twinjet, both aircraft share a common digital cockpit layout and are operated by a two man flight crew. Thanks to a proven reliability track-record, the 767 is approved for extended twin engine operations (ETOPS) making it a popular choice for airlines flying transatlantic routes.
