Fokker 50, serial number 20236, built in 1991, flew for Team Lufthansa under Contact Air, a regional partner operating within the Lufthansa Group's franchise branding, registered D-AFKU. The twin-turboprop regional airliner supported short-haul European routes feeding into Lufthansa's hub network from bases including Hamburg and Dusseldorf. As part of the broader Team Lufthansa brand encompassing several regional operators flying various turboprop and regional jet types, D-AFKU represented the smaller-capacity end of Lufthansa's feeder network, connecting secondary European cities to the airline's Frankfurt and Munich hubs during the aircraft's operational years.
