Airbus A320-271N, registered N986NK, flies for Spirit Airlines wearing a "Super Nintendo World" special livery featuring Mario Bros. characters, part of a promotional partnership tied to the opening of Nintendo-themed attractions at Universal theme parks. The eye-catching design has made the aircraft a favorite among aviation photographers and model collectors, appearing on routes across Spirit's US domestic and Caribbean network. Designed as a short/medium range narrow-body airliner to compete with the Boeing 737, the Airbus A320 was first flown on February 22nd, 1987. The A320 features side stick controllers and glass cockpit and was the world's first airliner to use use a digital fly-by-wire control system. Controversially, the software includes "flight envelope protection" to prevent the pilot from exceeding safe flight parameters.
