Boeing 767-3Y0ER, registered G-OBYF, became the last passenger 767 in UK commercial service when TUI Airways retired it on October 31, 2023, nearly 25.4 years after its May 1998 delivery to Britannia Airways. The aircraft also flew for Garuda Indonesia and Britannia Airways Germany as D-AGYF before settling into TUI's leisure fleet through Thomsonfly and Thomson Airways branding. Configured with 328 seats in an unusual eight-abreast layout, G-OBYF's retirement marked the end of nearly 40 years of British 767 passenger operations, with the aircraft's final commercial flight arriving from Heraklion to Manchester before ferrying to Istanbul for storage.
Designed as a wide-bodied, twin-engined airliner to fill the niche between the narrow-bodied 707 and wide-bodied 747, the 767 was first flown on September 26th, 1981. Developed in tandem with the narrow-bodied 757 twinjet, both aircraft share a common digital cockpit layout and are operated by a two man flight crew. Thanks to a proven reliability track-record, the 767 is approved for extended twin engine operations (ETOPS) making it a popular choice for airlines flying transatlantic routes.
