Airbus A330-200, registered G-MDBD, was one of three Thomas Cook widebody A330-200s scrapped at Manchester in February 2021 following the airline's September 2019 collapse into insolvency after 178 years of operation. Configured with 49 premium economy and 273 economy seats, the aircraft had served Thomas Cook's leisure network connecting the UK to long-haul holiday destinations. Unlike some of the carrier's leased A330s that returned to lessors AerCap and Aviation Capital Group and continued flying for other operators, G-MDBD was among the owned aircraft that met an immediate end, reflecting the finality of Thomas Cook's sudden liquidation.
Designed as a wide-bodied, long-haul passenger transport to compete with the Boeing 767, the A330 was first flown on November 2nd, 1992. It was designed as a lengthened version of the A300 and was developed in parallel with the larger, four-engined A340, enabling many of the components to be shared between the three types. The A330 also uses the same fly-by-wire technology that was introduced with the A320, featuring a glass cockpit and side-stick controllers.
