Airbus A320, registered D-ABHH, flew for Niki, the Austrian low-cost carrier founded by Formula One champion Niki Lauda in 2003 that partnered with, and was later absorbed by, Air Berlin. Niki continued operating under its own brand within the Air Berlin group until the parent company's August 2017 bankruptcy filing left Niki stranded when a planned Lufthansa buyout collapsed over EU competition concerns. Niki filed for insolvency on December 13, 2017, ceasing all flights the following day and leaving thousands of passengers stranded. British Airways owner IAG subsequently acquired Niki's assets for 20 million euros, relaunching operations as Vueling-affiliated Laudamotion.
Designed as a short/medium range narrow-body airliner to compete with the Boeing 737, the Airbus A320 was first flown on February 22nd, 1987. The A320 features side stick controllers and glass cockpit and was the world's first airliner to use use a digital fly-by-wire control system. Controversially, the software includes "flight envelope protection" to prevent the pilot from exceeding safe flight parameters. The highly successful design rapidly led to the development of the shortened-fuselage A318 and A319, and lengthened-fuselage A321 derivatives. More than 4,500 of the A320 family have been produced, almost all of which are still in active service. © Copyright 2003-2026 The Flying Mule, Inc.
