Airbus A330-233, serial number 828, first flew in March 2007 with test registration F-WWKI before delivery to ILFC and lease via Whitney Leasing to LTU as D-ALPI on April 20, 2007. The aircraft entered LTU service on the Dusseldorf-Munich route before LTU's 2009 merger into Air Berlin saw it repainted and continue flying under Air Berlin's colors through 2017. Following Air Berlin's collapse, the aircraft was stored, then acquired by AerCap and reregistered EI-GFJ, eventually finding a new home with Malaysia Airlines as 9M-MTW in 2018, extending its operational life well beyond its German origins.

Airbus A330-200

Designed as a wide-bodied, long-haul passenger transport to compete with the Boeing 767, the A330 was first flown on November 2nd, 1992. It was designed as a lengthened version of the A300 and was developed in parallel with the larger, four-engined A340, enabling many of the components to be shared between the three types. The A330 also uses the same fly-by-wire technology that was introduced with the A320, featuring a glass cockpit and side-stick controllers. The A330 has the same range and payload capacity as a DC-10 with 25% greater fuel efficiency.
