Airbus A320-214, registered OE-LOE, flew for Lauda Motion, the Austrian carrier founded by Formula One legend Niki Lauda that rebranded from Niki after Air Berlin's 2017 collapse. Ryanair Holdings acquired a majority stake in the airline, which relaunched as Laudamotion in March 2018 before rebranding again as simply Lauda in 2019. Based at Vienna, the carrier operated an all-Airbus A320-family fleet on short-haul leisure routes across Europe. Lauda represented Niki Lauda's second aviation venture after his earlier airline Lauda Air, continuing his decades-long involvement in Austrian commercial aviation until Lauda ceased independent branding under full Ryanair integration.
Designed as a short/medium range narrow-body airliner to compete with the Boeing 737, the Airbus A320 was first flown on February 22nd, 1987. The A320 features side stick controllers and glass cockpit and was the world's first airliner to use use a digital fly-by-wire control system. Controversially, the software includes "flight envelope protection" to prevent the pilot from exceeding safe flight parameters. The highly successful design rapidly led to the development of the shortened-fuselage A318 and A319, and lengthened-fuselage A321 derivatives.
