Airbus A330-341, registered PK-GPD, flies for Garuda Indonesia and has been reconfigured with a "Cargo" title sticker, joining sister aircraft PK-GPA in supporting the airline's freight operations using older A330-300 widebodies. As Garuda's A330 fleet has aged, several examples originally used for passenger service have taken on cargo-supplementing roles, reflecting the carrier's strategy of extending the operational value of its aircraft as it modernizes with newer widebody types. The aircraft continues to operate within Garuda's broader network, which spans domestic Indonesian routes as well as international services to Asia, Europe, and Australia from its Jakarta hub.
Designed as a wide-bodied, long-haul passenger transport to compete with the Boeing 767, the A330 was first flown on November 2nd, 1992. It was designed as a lengthened version of the A300 and was developed in parallel with the larger, four-engined A340, enabling many of the components to be shared between the three types. The A330 also uses the same fly-by-wire technology that was introduced with the A320, featuring a glass cockpit and side-stick controllers.
