Airbus A330-341, registered PK-GPA, holds a distinctive place in Garuda Indonesia's history as the airline's very first A330, delivered in December 1996 to replace its aging Airbus A300 fleet. Nearly three decades later, the aircraft has been repainted with cargo-specific titles, wearing a "Cargo" sticker as Garuda repurposed some of its older A330-300s for freight operations. The aircraft has also appeared in special liveries, including a Liverpool Football Club-branded scheme, reflecting Garuda's sponsorship ties to the English football club. PK-GPA's transition from launch passenger widebody to cargo-supporting asset illustrates the long operational life of Garuda's A330-300 fleet.
Designed as a wide-bodied, long-haul passenger transport to compete with the Boeing 767, the A330 was first flown on November 2nd, 1992. It was designed as a lengthened version of the A300 and was developed in parallel with the larger, four-engined A340, enabling many of the components to be shared between the three types. The A330 also uses the same fly-by-wire technology that was introduced with the A320, featuring a glass cockpit and side-stick controllers.
