Airbus A330-243, serial number 1261, was delivered to Fly Gangwon in November, becoming the small South Korean carrier's sole widebody and only leased A330-200. Registered HL8512, the aircraft entered service in February flying Yangyang to Jeju, followed by daily Taipei Taoyuan and four-weekly Hanoi routes, with two-year cargo contracts filling its 20-tonne belly hold. Fly Gangwon has faced turbulence, including a threatened loss of its international license under South Korea's minimum fleet-size rule and reported plans to relocate from Yangyang. By May, financial troubles reportedly grounded the carrier, with HL8512 flying to Shanghai Pudong awaiting an uncertain future.
Designed as a wide-bodied, long-haul passenger transport to compete with the Boeing 767, the A330 was first flown on November 2nd, 1992. It was designed as a lengthened version of the A300 and was developed in parallel with the larger, four-engined A340, enabling many of the components to be shared between the three types. The A330 also uses the same fly-by-wire technology that was introduced with the A320, featuring a glass cockpit and side-stick controllers.
