Airbus A330-243, registered F-UJCS, first flew in October 2015 and previously operated commercially for Avianca Brasil, recording its last commercial flight in 2017 before entering storage. Nearly new despite its age, the aircraft was acquired by France's Direction generale de l'armement and delivered to Escadron de Transport 3/60 "Esterel" in 2020, becoming one of the first of three A330-200s procured to replace France's aging A340 and A310 fleets. The aircraft is being converted to A330 MRTT "Phenix" tanker-transport configuration, supporting France's strategic air refueling and nuclear deterrent missions.
Designed as a wide-bodied, long-haul passenger transport to compete with the Boeing 767, the A330 was first flown on November 2nd, 1992. It was designed as a lengthened version of the A300 and was developed in parallel with the larger, four-engined A340, enabling many of the components to be shared between the three types. The A330 also uses the same fly-by-wire technology that was introduced with the A320, featuring a glass cockpit and side-stick controllers.
