Airbus A320-214, serial number 6776, flies with Hong Kong Airlines, registered B-LPO, as part of the carrier's short-to-medium-haul narrowbody fleet. Operating from Hong Kong International Airport, the aircraft serves regional destinations across Asia, including routes to mainland China and Japan. Hong Kong Airlines built its A320 fleet to complement its widebody operations, using the type for higher-frequency regional connections. The carrier, a subsidiary of Hainan Airlines Holding (later restructured under Fangda Aviation), has maintained a fleet of roughly a dozen A320s even as its long-haul widebody operations were significantly scaled back in recent years.
Designed as a short/medium range narrow-body airliner to compete with the Boeing 737, the Airbus A320 was first flown on February 22nd, 1987. The A320 features side stick controllers and glass cockpit and was the world's first airliner to use use a digital fly-by-wire control system. Controversially, the software includes "flight envelope protection" to prevent the pilot from exceeding safe flight parameters. The highly successful design rapidly led to the development of the shortened-fuselage A318 and A319, and lengthened-fuselage A321 derivatives.
