Airbus A330-223, serial number 828, was delivered in April 2007 to LTU International, a German long-haul carrier that Air Berlin absorbed the following year. From 2008, D-ALPI flew in full Air Berlin colors on long-haul routes connecting Germany to North America, including flights from Los Angeles and Miami to Dusseldorf. The widebody served through the airline's peak long-haul era before Air Berlin's 2017 collapse, after which it was withdrawn from use and stored. AerCap later took ownership, and the aircraft eventually found a new home with Malaysia Airlines, reregistered 9M-MTW in 2018.
Designed as a wide-bodied, long-haul passenger transport to compete with the Boeing 767, the A330 was first flown on November 2nd, 1992. It was designed as a lengthened version of the A300 and was developed in parallel with the larger, four-engined A340, enabling many of the components to be shared between the three types. The A330 also uses the same fly-by-wire technology that was introduced with the A320, featuring a glass cockpit and side-stick controllers.
