Air New Zealand Boeing 777-200ER ZK-OKJ was part of the airline's long-haul fleet and operated international services across the Pacific and to destinations in Asia and North America. The 777-200ER offered an effective combination of range, passenger capacity, and twin-engine efficiency, helping modernize Air New Zealand's widebody operations. ZK-OKJ carried the carrier's distinctive black and white branding during its career and was configured for long-distance passenger service. Air New Zealand introduced the 777-200ER in 2005, using the type alongside its larger 777-300ERs. The airline ultimately retired its remaining 777-200ER fleet following the dramatic reduction in international travel during the COVID-19 pandemic. Designed as a wide-bodied, twin-engined airliner to compete with the Airbus A330/A340 and the McDonnell Douglas MD-11, the 777 was first flown on June 12th, 1994. A pair of the world's largest diameter turbofan engines power the aircraft which currently holds the record for world's largest twin-engined airliner. The 777 was Boeing's first fly-by-wire airliner, featuring complete glass cockpit displays and flight envelope protection.
