Airbus A320 D-AAES was associated with the A320 development and demonstration program during the type's early years. The revolutionary A320 introduced digital fly-by-wire flight controls and cockpit side-stick controllers to mainstream commercial aviation, technologies that became defining features of subsequent Airbus aircraft. Powered by twin turbofan engines and designed for short and medium range routes, the A320 offered airlines improved efficiency and a wider cabin than competing narrowbody aircraft. Development and demonstration aircraft were used for flight testing, certification, customer presentations, and promotional appearances. The A320 entered commercial service in 1988 and ultimately became the foundation of one of the world's most successful airliner families.
Designed as a short/medium range narrow-body airliner to compete with the Boeing 737, the Airbus A320 was first flown on February 22nd, 1987. The A320 features side stick controllers and glass cockpit and was the world's first airliner to use use a digital fly-by-wire control system. Controversially, the software includes "flight envelope protection" to prevent the pilot from exceeding safe flight parameters. The highly successful design rapidly led to the development of the shortened-fuselage A318 and A319, and lengthened-fuselage A321 derivatives.
