Boeing 737-990, serial number 30017, line number 596, operated by Boeing as N737X. Built as the prototype of the stretched 737-900, N737X was used extensively for Boeing's development, certification and demonstration program for the new variant. The aircraft subsequently appeared as a Boeing "Technology Demonstrator," carrying special promotional markings while being used to showcase new systems and concepts. Unlike many prototype aircraft, it later entered normal airline service. Alaska Airlines acquired the aircraft as N302AS, where it joined the carrier's large Boeing 737 fleet. The historically significant airframe therefore progressed from 737-900 prototype and Boeing test aircraft to regular passenger service.

Boeing 737-900

Designed as a smaller, short-ranged alternative to the Boeing 707 and 727, the 737 was first flown on April 9th, 1967. Over its long operational carreer, the 737 has spawned numerous variants ranging in capacity from less than 100 to more than 200 seats. In fact, the 737 series is the best-selling jetliner in aviation history with more than 6,500 aircraft manufactured to date and more than 4,500 still in service with over 500 airlines around the world. Incredibly, there is a 737 taking off or landing somewhere in the world, on average, every five seconds.
