Airbus A320-214, serial number 3908, operated by Air Berlin as D-ABHO. Delivered new to TAM in May 2009 as PR-MYE, it remained with TAM and successor LATAM Brasil until transferring to Air Berlin in July 2017. Its Air Berlin career proved exceptionally brief. On September 30, 2017, D-ABHO overran the runway while landing at Westerland/Sylt, stopping about 30 meters into the grass without injuries or aircraft damage. Following Air Berlin's collapse it became OE-LOD with Niki and later Laudamotion, then D-AEUD with Eurowings. It was re-registered 9H-EUR with Eurowings Europe Malta in November 2022 and remains active.
Designed as a short/medium range narrow-body airliner to compete with the Boeing 737, the Airbus A320 was first flown on February 22nd, 1987. The A320 features side stick controllers and glass cockpit and was the world's first airliner to use use a digital fly-by-wire control system. Controversially, the software includes "flight envelope protection" to prevent the pilot from exceeding safe flight parameters. The highly successful design rapidly led to the development of the shortened-fuselage A318 and A319, and lengthened-fuselage A321 derivatives.
