Airbus A320-214, operated by Avianca as N821AV. Built at Toulouse with test registration F-WWIF, the aircraft was delivered new in September 2011 and ferried to Colombia via Tenerife and Fortaleza. Originally configured with 12 business and 138 economy seats, it was reconfigured for 12 business and 168 economy passengers in 2022. In November 2022, N821AV received a special LACSA heritage livery commemorating Costa Rica's historic Lineas Aereas Costarricenses, which became part of the TACA group and ultimately Avianca. N821AV remains active in 2026, operating Avianca services throughout Colombia and to destinations across Latin America.
Designed as a short/medium range narrow-body airliner to compete with the Boeing 737, the Airbus A320 was first flown on February 22nd, 1987. The A320 features side stick controllers and glass cockpit and was the world's first airliner to use use a digital fly-by-wire control system. Controversially, the software includes "flight envelope protection" to prevent the pilot from exceeding safe flight parameters. The highly successful design rapidly led to the development of the shortened-fuselage A318 and A319, and lengthened-fuselage A321 derivatives.
